Everything at CatchSunlight is created for sustainability. Sustainability is more than just having minimal environmental impact. It also includes being socially responsible. CatchSunlight takes no government grants or subsidized loans and purchases as much of the materials and labor for our greenhouses from local sources as is reasonably possible.
Our location has a short and cold growing season which means only rudimentry crops can be grown outside of a greenhouse. Catchsunlight provides a u-pick for the community, typically on Monday nights. We've found that by hosting farmers' markets at our location, people can enjoy the freedom of choosing their our products right from the vine. This method reduces our costs to a point where we only charge 1/2 of the Walmart prices or less for our produce. This allows for overall carbon reductions by eliminating the transportion of food from farms to stores. It also eliminates plastic packaging waste, and gives people the opportunity of seeing where their food comes from.
CatchSunlight envisions a future where communities can have their own food-production greenhouses in their neighborhoods. These local gardens will sustainably provide healthy food without the added carbon footprint from transportion or the addition of dangerous unrecycled plastic waste to the environment. The added benefit from community citizens working within greenhouses includes both mental and physical health. There is a proven correlation between working in the soil and improved mental health. This food-production model inexpensively provides food security to food-desert urban centers, as well as remote rural locations, and provides a buffer to supply chain interuptions or even nefarious efforts to subdue a population through hunger.
